Different Possible Successors to Suleiman the Magnificent

Just one other factor about Sehzade Mustafa: when he was in Manisa as a part of his training for the throne, Mahidevran was with him. A simple PoD of Mustafa actually taking the message from Mahidevran about the plot to kill him seriously could have made a huge difference. And if Mustafa was too honor bound for court intrigues, this is where Mahidevran could be useful.

For a bunch of elite warriors the Janissaries weren't all that elite, particularly past their first century or so.

Their effectiveness kinda faded once they were allowed to have families of their own, which kinda kills the purpose of being a Janissary in the first place.

Although I don't know if Sehzade Mehmet was a good prince since he was killed already before Mustafa died, plus there were other sons who died when they were just kids like Abdullah, Ahmed (Mustafa's younger brother) and so on.
