WI: Star Wars Wins The Academy Award for Best Picture (1977)

It might surprise some people today, but the orginal Star Wars was nominated for the Academy Award (or Oscar) for Best Picture of the year in 1977. It lost out to Annie Hall, but what if Star Wars had won instead? How would this have changed the franchise?

I'm not sure (or not willing to give an uneducated guess) at how it would affect the franchise. However, I imagine it would be the much-needed precedent that would allow other scifi films through the years to win Oscars which aren't purely in technical categories (as was the case with Avatar, Inception etc.).

Considering such awful tripe as "Avatar" actually went ahead and won the Oscar, this could well be in the realm of possibility.

Whoops. Among all the hype around that movie, I somehow thought it had to have gotten the Oscar for best movie. Thanks, this restores a bit of hope in mankind for me ;)
