Like it sez on the tin. Have a US president leave the USA to live in a rival nation and never return. A few rules...
...the prez in question must be a real-life POTUS, or..
...a real-life failed candidate for one of the two major parties, who wins election in the alternate time-line, or...
...a real-life veep who ascends to the oval-office in the alternate time.
(IOW you can't posit eg. that Alger Hiss becomes president and then defects).
But I will accept a fairly broad definition of a rival nation, not limited to enemy countries. For example, Israel and South Korea would both qualify, as they have a history of spying on the US. The point is, the president's defection has to be viewed as an act of disloyalty, motivated by sympathy for that nation against the US, or by a desire to avoid prosecution for having improperly assisted that nation in some way.
Oh, and the president can defect after he leaves office.
