German Empire vs Austro-Hungary

Hello all, given the animosity felt by German nationalists towards the peoples of Eastern Europe, the ethnic splits in Austro-Hungary and the Pan German movement it makes sense that the two Empires would ally with each other. But would it be possible for the two to end up opposed to each other. The scenario I have in mind is a somewhat more Slav friendly liberal Germany or at least a strong social democrat movement that includes them. A German not necessaraily in favour of full independence, but would at least be prepared to defend smaller countries in the region. I am using 'slavs' as a kind of short hand for the various ethnities, but it should mean the same either way.

Is this possible and would it put the two empire in different camps?

Germany spent a good deal of Wilhelm II's reign wooing both Russia and the UK. If Germany hadn't also been simultaneously antagonistic, they might have gotten their alliance. Which would have left Austria-Hungary to either give up the Balkans to their ally's ally (which frankly was the wiser option), or try to make friends with France.
