Communist/Radical Socialist Germany after WW1?

Gone Fishin'
During WW1, Germans underwent much hardship. Young men dying in the trenches, people going hungry because of the Entente blockade, and the eventual defeat. The German Empire was ended by pressure both foreign and domestic, and part of that domestic pressure was a flurry of socialist uprisings, primarily in Berlin (the Spartacists) and Munich (the Bavarian Soviet), reflecting the upheaval across all of Europe. Is it possible that Germany is transformed into a socialist republic through a revolution at the end of WW1? Would it ally with the Soviet Russians to spread the revolution? Or alternatively is it more plausible for a Germany to go communist in the interwar period?
