Chakkenge: The Kingdom of the Isles

Practically every fantasy/RPG setting has a Kingdom of the Isles (which, in a display of originality, has "isles" or "sea" somewhere on its name), no matter how unlikely its survival as a nation on a realistic timeline for that fantasy world would have been.

The challenge, should you take it, is, with a POD after the death of Charlemagne, create a rich and stable nation made up of all the important islands between Italy and Spain: Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, the Balearics, and Malta. The capital to be placed at the island of your convenience.

Try to keep it outside of the ASB. A merchant nation is possible, but a nation than takes over Spain's place as colonizer of the New World is quite unlikely.

Easily. Aragon did OTL take over Sicily, and Sardinia. At some point, Aragon was partitioned such that Balearic isles were independent kingdom.

So you could get Aragon partitioned so as to have Kingdom of the Isles including Balearics, Sicily, Sardinia and taking over Corsica, but excluding mainland Catalonia and mainland Italy. The capital has plausible options of Palermo or Palma...

In the 13th Century Pisa controlled all these islands, However they got in a war with Genoa, lost their Fleet and went into decline, till conquered by Milan.

If they avoid the war with Genoa, for another century, then fight of a growing Argon, You could have your kingdom of the Isles, with a mainland capital, Pisa.

It's not that unusual. The Kingdom of Sicily could have dopne it. Or you could have the Qalbid dynasty have a falling-out with the Fatimids and declare their own realm in the western Mediterranean, centered around Palermo.

IIRC, the title 'Lord of the Isles' traditionally was a Scottish one that denoted overlordship of the Hebrides, so it's not even linguistically unprecedented.

And for a time it was even called the Kingdom of Man and the Isles, which sounds very fantasy world.
