Canadians stereotyped as rude and violent knuckledraggers

Simple. Have the typical stereotype of Canadians be less like this and more like this.

(re: historical events, as much as possible, change the perception of them, without changing the event itself. So eg. "FLQ gets more global media attention, Canadians associated with bombings and martial law", and explain why it gets more attention, rather than "FLQ becomes a mass movement, thousands die in terrorist campaign, police mow down sovereigntists in the streets." Like I say, though, as much as possible, because you might need to change a few secondary things to explain why the major events might get different coverage, eg. "US 1960s more peaceful, bored American media looks north for sensational stories.")
