How could something like this go through?

Simple; don't have Jackson and Calhoun come to blows, and John stays on for a third term during Andrew's second.

Bill Bradley beats out Gore in 2000 in a close race and to tie himself to the "Clinton Economy" and because of the close nomination race picks Gore as his VP. Gore says "eh why not" and says yes, the Bradley/Gore squeeks out a win over Bush/Cheney.

John Nance Garner decides to stay on the ticket in 1940.
